What we do

To tackle the systemic challenge of water scarcity in rural Mediterranean regions, IDRON brings together research institutions, public authorities, SMEs, and civil society in a transnational cluster. This collaborative framework fosters innovation through joint action, knowledge exchange, and stakeholder engagement. At the core of the project lies a dual strategy—developing new water sources and optimizing water use—supported by advanced technologies and traditional practices to ensure climate-resilient solutions.

WORK PACKAGES

Work package 1 (WP1): Building the Knowledge Base for Sustainable Water Management

This work package focuses on analyzing water scarcity challenges and designing an integrated framework for smart water management. Activities include mapping regional water resources, evaluating existing technologies, and co-creating the IDRON Methodology for dual strategies—developing new water sources and optimizing water use. Stakeholder engagement will be central, with targeted workshops and knowledge-sharing sessions to empower local authorities and farmers.

Work package 2 (WP2): Testing and Validating Innovative Solutions in Rural Areas

The aim is to implement and assess cutting-edge technologies that enhance water efficiency and resilience in agriculture. Activities include deploying IoT-based smart irrigation systems, piloting wastewater reuse and rainwater harvesting, and integrating biosensors with satellite data into the Decision Support System (DSS). Each pilot will serve as a real-world testbed, generating evidence for scalability and supporting capacity-building for SMEs, cooperatives, and rural communities.

Work package 3 (WP3): Transferring Knowledge and Scaling Impact Across MED Regions

This work package ensures the long-term adoption and replication of IDRON solutions. Key activities include establishing the IDRON Living Lab for stakeholder collaboration, creating transferability and scalability frameworks, and organizing high-level policy events to influence regional strategies. Dissemination efforts will include toolkits, training modules, and networking platforms to foster cross-border knowledge exchange and amplify results throughout the Euro-MED area.
